Previously known rather unfortunately for the mediocre J-horror-by-numbers scavenge-fest Ju-Rei: The Uncanny - but latterly also for the rather better Kuchisake-onna (aka Carved) - Koji Shiraishi's least-known, but probably best-loved, work is Noroi: The Curse. At first I was about to roll my eyes with the scene with Kayabashi's wife and Marika, but the acting and playfulness of the scene just sold the justification of having a camera. It's so refreshing, to not see all of the twists and turns coming, and to be surprised by every scene. “Only you can be my servant.” Renee, a girl cursed with immortality, was fired from her job for being too creepy and is now seeking employment. One of my absolute favourite films! I mean, we have to allow that the movie is about a real demon and a real curse, but once we do, it's not really a stretch to be ok with that curse involving people committing suicide or pigeons as evil portents. Random knots tied everywhere? One of my all-time favorite movies, horror or not. Many elements of the movie also heavily reminded me of Lake Mungo, one of my favorite horror movies.
